My work responds to an article in the Birmingham Mail about the missing diamond of Lord Mayor Jim Eamer which was lost in Canon Hill Park. This encouraged me to investigate a theory that a magpie could have picked it up and put it in a bird’s nest. The Spencer Diamond which formed a centrepiece of the mayoral chain was the first diamond cut in Birmingham, making it a valuable piece of history lost in time.
Visiting Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham to investigate this theory, I located several birds nests as a means of re-visualising the final destination of the diamond. Using this project I wish to draw public attention to what is presented as ‘the Magpie Theory’.
